Week 10: Sharing Feelings and Saying Good-Bye

Time flies so fast...

     These ten weeks passed  very quickly and we didn't feel it. Words are not enough to express my gratutude towards people who gave me the opportunity to participate in this wonderful course.  A big thank you to Robert for his warm affection towards us and for his genuine desire to impart to us what he believed to be important. We had the good fortune of having a good teacher who shaped our thoughts and inspired us in carrying out our final projects. Another big thank you to the American English Institute for the course and its wonderful management.

     The course was a total success for me as it helped me broaden my horizons and see things differently. The goal of the course was to enable  us, teachers, to understand and use appropriate technology to enhance the learning environment and outcomes for our students.

     The most important thing was that the course managed to cover a lot of inspiring topics. Throughout each week we read about, analysed, reflected on, and discussed articles and resources related to language teaching and technology. We explored a lot of of options for integrating web tools in the classroom. I couldn't say a topic was more important than others as I benefit from all of them. I became very passionate about exploring the various tools and websites. Looking back on those past weeks, I realize I've enjoyed every assignment.. I highly appreciated such tasks as writing ABCD objectives, creating a Delicious page, desighning a technology-enhanced lesson plan, creating rubrics and webquests, interactive Power Point presentations and online course sites.

     I took a real pleasure in sharing my blog with anyone who was willing to stop and read my reflections. The beauty of the course lay in creating a technology-enhanced project for our classroom where we incorporated what we learned from the course and applied it in our teaching. I think we did a nice job, at least we did our best.

     I would say that everything that has been started must be continued and improved. I need to enrich my way of exploring technology and I'll do this. Now when I tasted some "other sweets" I'll go further and implement all I've learned with a lot of care and passion.

     I'll infect my colleagues with my enthusiasm for technology, we'll collaborate and contribute to build our students' skills in English language learning.

     Finally, I would like to thank all my online friends for sharing their thoughts and wisdom with me. I will miss them all. I hope we'll keep in touch soon because

       " Goodbyes are not forever

         Goodbyes are not the end

Week 9 Multiple Intelligences/ Learning Styles

     This week we got to know about multiple intelligences and learning styles. Gardner's article gave us insights how to address a diversity of abilities. If we know our students' style, it would help us understand and prepare the activities for them better than before. 

    Although most students are capable of learning a second language to some degree of competence, some of them are better equipped for the second language learning task than others. Teachers can encourage development by providing enrichment opportunities in each of the areas of the intellect.

     In a real classroom situation, we cannot individualize instruction for each of our students. It is simply not a realistic goal. What we can do is teach in a variety of ways and regularly offer an exciting range of activities to our students. When we are planning a unit, we should try to incorporate various types of intelligences into the activities. A natural way to accomplish this is by teaching in an interdisciplinary format. Life is an integrated experience, and integrating subjects can make the content more meaningful to students.

    This week we have learnt how to incorporate technology in developing students' learning styles. Technology is a valuable tool. It has the power to support students and teachers in gathering, organizing and presenting information. Computers may extend and enhance what students and teachers are able to produce. 
     The articles we've read this week provide a range of techniques specific for each student learning style.  I find them all  very stimulating and look forward to getting into the classroom to try these techniques out. I will use the ones that suit my students' needs and intelligences. I'll make them work on through a combination of the ear, eye, reflection and by movement. As Tony Stockwell says "To learn anything fast and effectively, you have to see it, hear it and feel it."

Week 8: ANVILL MAGIC

     We've had a busy and fruitful week as we have explored  some effective Web-based communication tools. I'm not much good at technology and I'm lucky I have the chance to learn from my online friends and teachers. Everything I've learnt from this course is useful for my language teaching. A lot of thanks to Jeff for joining us and sharing the ANVILL magic. I couldn't join the webinar, but as Robert suggested I viewed the recording and I  found it amazing. Still, I need some  more  time to digest the information and implement some of the tools in my classroom. Adding one or more web-based communication tools to my courses will help engage my students and  diminish the sense of isolation, will encourage critical thinking skills including: deducing, analyzing errors, constructing support etc.

      This week I've learnt how to create Nicenet and Wiki Classes. I encountered some difficulties in creating a Wiki using Google sites but I kept trying and I found I could do it. A thought came to my mind: "The devil is not so black as it is painted".

       Posting my draft project on Robert's wiki was the most exciting task. We all managed to post them on time. I hope my project isn't so bad.  I shared my impressions on Lekha's project. She didn't give me  the chance to find any mistake. Such a nice project! Congratulations, Lekha!

     I liked peer reviewing. Reading somebody's work enables you to become more able to identify, diagnose and solve some of your own writing issues and in the same time the writer/author profits from the feedback. It allows a diversity of opinions to be brought on the table.

Week 7: Learner Autonomy

     I'm glad I've done and learnt a lot of things this week. The suggested articles  aimed at fostering the development of autonomous learners. This week's topic made me reflect on my teaching. What I've learnt  is that we can make teaching very interesting without using spoon-fed methods. As somebody said:" Spoon feeding in the long run teaches students nothing but the shape of spoon". Sometimes teachers forget that they can't teach students everything, they can only help them find it within themselves.

     Teachers should go far beyond the transmission of knowledge and should empower students by assisting them in acquiring the knowledge, skills and strategies needed to become autonomous learners who can take responsibility for their own learning. Sometimes students learn only to pass the exam, not for the sake of learning and I dare say it's a tough situation. If teachers manage to change students' attitude towards learning then they can both get good achievements. Autonomous learners draw on their intrinsec motivation when they accept responsibility for their own learning: and success in learning strengthens their intrinsec motivation. The efficiency and effectiveness of the autonomous learner means that the knowledge and skills acquired in the classroom can be applied to situations outside the classroom.. Some good strategies and technologies could be a solution for this kind of problems. Technology is just a tool. In order to get students working together and motivating them, the teacher is the most important. The teacher should organize his/her lesson and find the convenient techniques. Dealing with a language classroom the use of authentic materials is perhaps the most important point of the learner training.

     This week we've created a sample activity for one-computer classroom. It was easy and interesting. The readings helped us realize there are a lot of strategies to be applied in this kind of classrooms. When teachers weave structured, student-centered activities—based on digital ressources—into lessons, students appreciate the result. I really appreciate the activities designed  for this week and I hope I could use all acquired knowledge into practice.

Week 6. Getting Brighter with Interactive Power Point

     This week I've learnt how to integrate interactive technologies into the classroom and make my lessons memorable. The readings proposed by Robert and Courtney have been extremely helpful as they describe how innovative classroom instruction and student particiption can be achieved through the use of interactive techniques. The articles I've read focus on the powerful impact of the interactive techniques upon students learning. They highlight their benefits of using different interactive strategies in the classroom of different size.
      The main objective behind adopting such techniques while teaching is to remove the boredom among the learners and help them enjoy and comprehend the lesson well. The teacher must initiate interactive sessions in between the lesson so that the learners can voice out their opinions and express their views. In such a way students may dicover that learning is more fun than they previously thought.

      I' m overwhelmed by all the information provided this week. The topic "Interactive power point" has been very interesting  for me. I must admit I didn't know how to use games and quizzes on slides. As we were asked to create a short PPpresentaion. I did my best to make it interactive. I used a Multiple Choice Quiz on Travel Vocabulary, Blank slide and Quick Write. I tried to create a Jeopardy game but I failed, I'll try it later. Now, I'm thinking of some ways to improve/develop my PP and use it interactively in my classroom.
     And finally, I would share some reflections on my project. This week things have taken shape and I've made some steps towards the achievement of my final project.
     In my project I'm focusing on 14 students, (2nd year students) who face some problems: poor writing skills and lack of collaboration. Thus, I've chosen a Project Based Learning type of writing to help them produce quality writing products and collaborate on their writing assignments and namely, a Zunal webquest on making a class newspaper. The newspaper will be on line, and the authentic audience - the other  three classes I teach. This week we've made the first steps.
      On Thursday I met my students and explained to them the essence of the project. I organized a creative brainstorming on identifying the purpose of the newspaper, on what they know about newspapers. We discussed the structure of a newspaper; the difference between a news story and feature story; who is going to read the newspaper; what type of stories could go and the columns/sections of the newspaper. They got excited about the project and I hope they will show great interest till the end and produce nice writings. Tomorrow I'll meet them in the computer lab and I'll make them familiar with the webquest, exact asignments, assessment criteria and some ressources. I hope my plan works and my students like it.

Week 5 Sweet Tastes of PBL and WebQuests

     Finally, I'm relieved as I've done all my assignments though I'm not sure about their quality.  But as somebody said" Doing your best at this moment puts you in the best place for the next moment".
     This week has been full of activities, all challenging, interesting and worth the efforts made. I've read about PBL and WebQuests and thought about ways how they might work in my classroom. I'm fascinated by their beauty and utility as they ask students to learn in a new way. I've read Susan Gaer's article where she focuses on less teaching and more learning. She amazingly reveals that PBL builds trust between staff and students because the latter are given a voice and teachers are put in a place of learning right alongside students.
I came across a very nice poem written by Matti Helela   
        In education it is trust
       That gives a thrust
       It creates a positive atmosphere
     And learning can appear.                                                     
                 Sharing the responsibility
                 Enhances the ability
                 To learn the knowledge and skills
                 That give the chills.
Without interaction
We learn a fraction
Together we learn indeed
The skills we really need.
       

      The poem underlines the benefits of student-teacher collaboration / student autonomy. By going deep and taking an active role in their own learning, students retain a great deal more than when teachers "stand and deliver"

     This week we have started to look at different technologies that could be used for our projects. I've described some potential tecnology changes I would do in order to overcome the class issues described last week (poor writing skills and lack of collaboration). I must confess that at the beginning of the week I had butterflies in my stomach as I was supposed to choose the right tool that suits the problems mentioned above. I didn't know what technology could be the most appropriate. Now I feel lighter and renewed with enthusiasm thanks to Robert, our mentor, who helped me narrow my chaotic ideas and choose a good tool. I think a WebQuest on making a class newspaper would be a great idea. 

     After being a little apprehensive at creating a WebQuest I found it quite interesting. I've learnt the  different elements that go together to create it. Looking for the appropriate ressources for the task was time consuming but worthwhile. I've discovered such a wonderful tool to cultivate learners' autonomy.

      And this is not all. I've created my own Rubrics on RubiStar for one of my classes, namely for an essay "The Inernet - the death of the newspaper?". The rubrics are easy to create and could be applied for any lesson. They save time and establish good and clear evaluation criteria. The rubrics monitor the students' performance by showing them how to meet their teachers' expectations. I wish I could have discovered RubiStar earlier!  But as we all know it is never late........

Week 4. Putting Precious Things Into My Bag

     Before summarizing the week activities I want to thank Robert and Melissa for their great job, guidance and help.

     Wow, this week everything has come up roses. Precious things have been put into our hands. We have read interesting articles refreshing our minds about ways to use computers to enhance writing and reading skills. We all know that its use has plenty of advantages. All we need is to think of good ways to integrate them into our classes so as to bring liveness, interest and motivation. Computers allow learners to read, create and share. They give students immediate feedback and can solve some of their needs. The most important benefit of reading using a computer is its ability to engage students providing them with guided practice situations. 

     An interesting and not so easy task was to design and share with the group a technology-enhanced lesson plan. Planning lessons or writing objectives is something that teachers do weekly as they are the bones of any classroom learning activity.  It's been my first experience writing a plan using techology and I don't know if I've managed to write it properly. I admit there could be some errors but again, mistakes are tools to make us aware and help us improve.

     With all these things on my plate I think my ideas have become brighter and I'll implement all this in my classroom. I've  enjoyed writing objectives in ABCD style. They help the teacher design lessons that will be easier for the student to comprehend and for the teacher to evaluate.

     The third task was to point out some issues or problems my class is experiencing. It was a little embarassing for me as there are more issues and I couldn't focus just on  one. However, I've pinpointed my students need so that I may carry out a need-driven technology project. 

     Honestly,  I don't know how to do it at this moment but I'll learn by trying. Actually it is not how good you are but how good you want to be. Perhaps the most important element in mastering the techniques of success is experience. But once you have the fundamentals, acquiring the experience is a matter of time. So, till next time.

Week 3 : One Destination, More Paths

     The third week has come to an end and I've just finished to gather my reflections on it. I'm very impressed with the collegiality that my friends have shown in sharing ideas on nicenet and their blog posts. Throughout the whole week we all participated in discussions, shared issues in discussion threads. Reading others' comments and posts encourages learning from each other which is an amazing thing because minds are like parachutes, they work only when they are open. In other words, collaboration makes our work better.

     We all have explored the many paths that lead to the same destination, I want to say  the destination is the goal while a path is the means to get there. Until we reach that goal we should remain flexible, committed to the goal and creative about achieving it.

     This week has been full of learning,  I've run through some wonderful paths and I thoroughly enjoyed them. First of all I read information on integrating technology in aural/oral skills and found utterly brilliant sites. I learnt how to create a Delicious account and save my favourite websites on there. I'm so glad to have met Delicious.com, for  it may keep my important links accessible and safe.

    Another activity was to read some articles about the use of technlogy in improving studens' aural/oral skills. They made me think on my way of teaching and gave me insights to improve it. The ideas about the use of technology in the classroom will help me make my lessons more effective and interesting.

     It is desirable that teachers should change some of their methods, bring appropriate materials in the classroom and make a step forward. There can be infinite uses of the computer and of new age technology,  but if the teachers themselves are not able to bring it into the classroom and make it work then it fails.

    One thing is certain:" If we teach today as we taught yesterday, we rob our students of tomorrow" (John Dewey)

     Therefore, I'm looking forward to moving to another path.

When Things Go Right

     I am here to continue my thoughts...
     The second week is coming to an end. Time flies so quickly but still I've managed to find out so many things which make me feel over the moon, if I may say so. All I've learnt came  in handy.
     Writing objectives wasn't new for me, I did it before in a different way, I mean not following the ABCD model. I've read my colleagues' posts in the nicenet and blogs as well, I am thankful to all of them for sharing their ideas and experience. I am learning new things from them and they encourage me whenever I'm in a tight spot.
      This Weekly activities have given me fascinating insights in designing my future lesson projects and I'm looking forward to passing to another step.
       The tasks I am suggested to complete every week make me remember one saying:" Whenever you are asked if you can do a job, tell them,"Certainly I can!" then get busy and find out how to do it".
    

Walking in the Direction of Dreams

   I think back on the first day of this course, I guess I was insecure, I felt I couldn't cope with the tasks, I'm still feeling the same. However, everytime I face a difficulty I console myself thinking that the true path to success is through the fear of failure. If you aren't scared enough of failing, you are unlikely to succeed. I think all of us experience it.    My motto for this course is " take a leap of faith and just do it."

   Thus, these days I've learnt a lot of things which pave the way for changes in my teaching. I've found out some other search engines which prove to be great sources of information. I'll recommend all of them to my students so that they may improve their ways of searching on the Internet and build some new ideas. Besides I've created some objectives in ABCD style which is fantastic.

Just An Attempt

It's my first attempt to create a blog. I've done some things this week. I 've managed to log into Nicenet and introduce myself to all the participants. For me it's a new world and I'm interested in everything I'm supposed to do.

Making a New Step

      Today I've managed to create my blog and visit some other participants' links. I'd like to tell" Good Work! Way to Go" to all of them.
      I've created this blog so that I may share my thoughts with other people. I found it not so difficult though it's my first time blogging and it took me a little time. I enjoyed doing it and I'm entirely motivated by learning new and useful things from my creative instructor and colleagues. I wish success to everybody!
